About Furbo

Furbo Hotels & Information

Furbo, or Na Forbacha in the Irish language, is a village with a population of around 800 in Connemara, County Galway. It is situated on the coast between Barna and An Spideal. Furbo is the first settlement to the west of Galway where Irish is the language used in the school, church and at community meetings. About 40% of people living in Furbo use Irish as their first language.

The headquarters of the Gaeltacht Authority - Udaras na Gaeltachta is located in Na Forbacha. Although Furbo is in the Gaeltacht, English is commonly used in day to day life, particularly amongst younger age groups. Furbo is a typical Gaeltacht location with no village street or centre, but it has around fourteen townlands, most of which run North to South. Although it is approximately 12km from Galway city centre it has maintained its rural nature quite successfully in recent years due to strong opposition to major development from the local community.

There is a popular local hotel located near Furbo, the Connemara Coast Hotel which has excellent accommodation, bars and restaurants.
